Olly in the Open Ocean: Thesis Investigation 1
Olly’s Ocean Adventure is a fully illustrated children’s book that I designed from concept to completion. This project highlights my ability to create engaging, age-appropriate visuals through thoughtful character development, vibrant underwater scenes, and playful typography. I focused on building a cohesive visual narrative that supports the emotional arc of the story while appealing to young readers. From color palette selection to page layout and visual pacing, every design decision was made to enhance the storytelling experience and bring Olly’s world to life in a fun, accessible way.
This children’s book was created as part of my thesis project, which aimed to use design as a tool to raise awareness about animals in captivity, specifically targeting a younger audience. Tackling a serious subject, I focused on crafting a lighthearted and visually engaging story that children could enjoy, while subtly introducing the deeper message about the emotional and physical effects of captivity on animals. Through thoughtful illustration, color choices, and narrative design, this publication reflects my belief that powerful messages can be delivered in accessible and age-appropriate ways.
